Harnessing the power of the wind has been something that cultures have been doing for over two thousand years and research suggests that the early Persians in an area of which is now Iran first investigated how wind energy might be used. The first windmills to appear in that area were also the first in the world and were built sometime around the seventh century. These very first prototypes would be covered in large blankets of material which would act as sails on the blades of the mills to assist in powering water storage and milling.
